Hong Kong: Rising Cases and Renewed Vaccination Efforts
In Hong Kong, the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) has reported a notable increase in COVID-19 activity since mid-March. Surveillance data indicates that the percentage of respiratory samples testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 has risen to 8.21%, up from 1.71% four weeks prior, marking the highest rate in the past six months. Singapore: Doubling of Cases and Hospitalizations
Singapore is experiencing a significant surge in COVID-19 cases, with the Ministry of Health reporting a near doubling of infections from 13,700 in the first week of May to 25,900 in the second week. The surge is primarily driven by the FLiRT variants, specifically KP.1 and KP.2, which account for over two-thirds of cases. These variants are sublineages of the JN.1 strain, and while there is no clear evidence suggesting they cause more severe illness, their rapid spread is a cause for concern.
In response, Singapore’s health authorities have reintroduced mask advisories, particularly in crowded indoor settings. Public hospitals have been instructed to defer non-urgent elective procedures and to utilize transitional care facilities to manage bed capacity. The Ministry of Health is also encouraging eligible individuals, especially those aged 60 and above or with underlying health conditions, to receive an additional vaccine dose if they have not done so in the past year.
